Best for the children

Welcome to Year 5!

Welcome to Year 5, there is a big change for the children this year as they move into upper school where they finally get to head up stairs. Expectations are increased further in this year as we prepare the children for Year 6. On their learning journey in Year 5, they will experience a range of rewarding opportunities which will allow them to look back on their year fondly. There is something for every child; they will have the opportunity to attend ‘Hit the Surf’, visit Broom House Farm, Beamish Museum and the Winter Gardens. Children also get to extend their sporting experiences by taking part in the Ashbrooke Cricket Festival, working with the Newcastle Eagles and learning all about bike safety through the ‘Bikeability’ course as well as having swimming lessons at Southmoor Academy. As part of the Year 5 curriculum, children also learn about their bodies and the changes they will go through during puberty – this is delivered by a team of NHS school nurses.

In Year 5, children are taught English and foundation subjects in their four register classes and are taught in maths sets on a morning. This allows children to work with different adults and children, encouraging them to build their relationships in school.

Teachers set homework weekly which is given out on a Thursday and expected to be brought back in by Tuesday of the following week. Spellings are set on Friday and children are expected to return a completed homework sheet in preparation for their test the following Friday. Children are required to bring reading books into school every day and to change them at least once a week. We would appreciate your support in signing your child’s reading diary on a regular basis.

In Year 5 we expect the children to try their best in everything they do. In return, they will be supported and challenged to achieve their potential.

What have we been up to?

This term we have had the opportunity to research, design and then  taste some scones!

There were many different concoctions created, all bursting with flavour, some favourites were; the cookie dough and chocolate chip scones and the raspberry and blueberry scones.

Beamish 2018

This term we have been studying all we can about the Victorians. As part of our learning we had the opportunity to visit Beamish Museum to learn what it was like to live during the Victorian era.

Throughout the day we had many brilliant activities; we went down the mine, had a talk about the Pit Ponies, took part in an actual Victorian school lesson and of course, visited the sweet shop!

We had a wonderful day!

Hit the Surf

This term we have had the amazing opportunity to learn how to be a lifeguard! We headed down to Seaburn beach where we met the real life guards who spoke to us all about water safety and what they would do if someone was in trouble in the water.

Then it was our turn! We got our wet suits on and learned how to surf! We had a fantastic time!
