It is our intention that our sequenced English curriculum will promote learning for life, by ensuring children acquire the necessary literary knowledge, skills and understanding which will equip them with the fundamental tools to achieve in the academy and beyond.
At Hill View Junior Academy, we value reading as a key life skill and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong learners. We believe reading is key for academic success and also a door to future learning and development.
It is our intention to immerse pupils in the wonders of quality texts to instil a love for reading, a passion for discovery and a confidence to explore their imagination.
Our intention is that by the time they leave Hill View Junior Academy EVERY child becomes a reader in order to open doors for all regardless of background and culture.
We value the impact reading has on vocabulary and how in turn our children’s understanding of the wider world around them is culturally and socially shaped by what they read.
We aim to make reading enjoyable and strongly believe that inviting spaces to read, such as reading corners and our library, coupled with exciting reading initiatives all help to foster the love of reading we continually strive to achieve.
Accelerated Reader
How it works:
Pupils are assigned a book level based on an online assessment. Pupils can read any book within this level. On completion of the book, pupils take an online quiz - our pass rate target is 85%.
Reading Engaged Time (per day)
The program calculates how long each pupil is reading each day using the number of words in the book (word count) and the time taken between each quiz. Our target is for an engage time of 25 minutes per day - some of this will be done in school, but the majority will need to be done at home please.
Success:
To increase success rates, you can ask your child to tell you about the story they are reading or discuss any new vocabulary with them.
When choosing a book in your ZPD (Zone of Proximal Difference) don't forget to select an appropriate interest level
This does not mean you can't choose and read books in the other interest levels, you might not enjoy the story or understanding some of the themes.
Don't forget to use the Accelerated Reader book finder feature, Advance Search, this will help you find books specific to YOU.
- LY (Lower Years, ages 5 to 8)
- MY (Middle Years, ages 9 to 13)
- MY+ (Middle Years Plus, ages 12 and above)
- UY (Upper Years, ages 14 and above)

Our library is a fantastic addition to our school. After a recent make over, and huge investment in new award winning and current books, it is looking better than ever and is such a relaxing space to get lost in a book. Every week all children get to visit the library in their dedicated slot where they can peruse the shelves that contain hundreds of varied and rich titles. Library books are scanned out and can be taken home for children to enjoy with their parents. Take a look at some of the images below and make sure you visit next time you are in school.
