Our Modern Foreign Languages Curriculum

At Hill View Junior Academy, we aim for children to GROW, allowing children to have the experiences of Gratitude, Resilience, Opportunity and Wonder. When French is planned for and taught these drivers are of a focus. We use the Language Angels scheme of work and resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils by using a wide variety of themes and topics. The four key language learning skills; listening, reading, writing and speaking will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered across the primary phrase. All pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating. Learning a second language also offers pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity and develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and cultural differences. The intention is that pupils will be working towards becoming life-long language learners.

“To learn a language is to have one more window from which to look at the world.”

Chinese Proverb

The National Curriculum for French states that all children will receive:

Liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

At Hill View Junior Academy, we use The Language Angels scheme as a basis of the French curriculum. Our objectives are progressive through the key stage and closely linked to the National Curriculum, this ensures a high standard of teaching and learning in French. We focus closely on the language skills that children need to fully understand French. Topics are sequenced in an order that allows for skills to be progressively built on as pupils go further on their education journey.

When teaching French, teachers ensure that learning is engaging through meaningful tasks and interactive lessons. The curriculum is designed to be broad and balanced, however learners constantly revisit skills to maintain their memory of key vocabulary and grammatical formations. Considerations are given to those children who require additional support or who are on the SEND register to ensure all learning is accessible in line with the school’s policy of inclusion for all. Cross curricular links are encouraged where possible and exploration of a different culture is focused on so children learn respect and understanding of different lives to theirs.
