At Hill View Junior Academy, we aim for children to GROW, allowing children to have the experiences of Gratitude, Resilience, Opportunity and Wonder. We believe a high quality and enjoyable physical education programme is a vital part of a child’s development. We use the REAL PE programme to drive the development of each Hill View pupil through their Physical education lessons. We will continue to aim to develop each child’s physical confidence and skills enabling them to lead healthy lifestyles. Through the curriculum we offer the children opportunities to compete both against themselves and others, in order to build self- confidence, resilience and a sense of fair play. The curriculum is designed to enable all children to participate including those who are more able, as well as those with additional needs. The P.E. and Sports premium has been used and will continue be used to promote and develop these aims, as well as support teaching and support staff in their continuous professional development.
“It is really important that we promote competitive sport in schools. It is very important that we recognise that has to be underpinned by high quality physical education and by getting children into regular exercise patterns.”
Seb Coe
The National Curriculum for PE states that all children will receive:
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
- are physically active for sustained periods of time.
- engage in competitive sports and activities.
In Hill View Junior School, children are taught two, one-hour long PE session a week, teaching a variety of invasion games, dance, gymnastics, Swimming (Year 5) and outdoor adventurous activities. Children learn how to apply all skills taught throughout their school journey in isolation and combination. They develop an understanding of how to improve, evaluate themselves and others and recognise their own success. Children are also provided with swimming lessons throughout Year 5 to allow them to meet the objectives outlined in the National Curriculum. PE is adapted when necessary to ensure it is fully inclusive and all children are engaged. Throughout KS2, class teachers follow the REAL PE programme. The aim of this is to see a clear progression of skills throughout their school journey.
